SCVNGR is a location-based mobile game that is about checking in and doing challenges on the iPhone or Android phones. You can setup challenges that get people interacting with you and encourage more interaction by offering rewards or prizes for people who win the challenges.

 

The advantages to using SCVNGR or something similar to it is that you can create challenges which will encourage people to engage with your sales people and exhibit booth in ways that can help you gain mindshare. SCVNGR games are also fun and exhibit visitors will tell their friends, creating a viral marketing buzz.

Setting up a SCVNGR hunt is easy to do. And for a low level game, there is no charge. The application is free for smart phone users.

Utilizing social media marketing for display booths is appropriate for some vertical markets more than others. If you’re in a tech-oriented business, where most of your customers will have smart phones, this can add a fun and challenging way for them to learn more about your business offerings.

Lighting Control Exhibit Booth

Company XLight sells residential lighting control systems. Their booth features a wall of controllers, a wall of wall-mounted controllers that are mechanically manipulated (similar in look and feel to light switches), another wall of touch panel displays, and a trade show table of literature.

There is a sign asking people to “check in” and noting that there is a SCVNGR hunt. When the visitor fires up the SCVNGR application, the challenge list says:

1) Check-In
2) Social Check In (bump phones with friends and get points) – this encourages show visitors to talk with each other and tell them about your booth.
3) Photograph a touchpanel that shows the lights turned off (now the visitor has to find a touchpanel and manipulate it to turn the lights off)

After going through your setup challenges, the visitor can unlock the “reward” of your choice. That may be a free t-shirt, a Starbucks gift card, or anything else of your choice.
